Talking about the Netherlands, people often incorrectly call it Holland. In fact, only the central part of the Netherlands is geographically named Holland. Some bird species have found a haven in the watery swamps. The government has created sanctuaries to allow plants, birds, and small animals to thrive. Wooden windmills helped to drain water from the land for over years. Today there are other sources of flood control and sources of power.

The Netherlands is republic with a constitutional monarchy. The Dutch monarchy dates back to Prince William of Orange in the 16th century. King Willem-Alexander is the reigning monarch. The Dutch parliament called the States General has two houses. The members of the Lower House are elected by the people every four years.

The Upper House has 15 members who are elected by local councils for a four-year term. Because the Netherlands has no mountain ranges or natural borders, it was not able to protect itself from invading neighbors.

Holland is a place with a lot of diversity. In the major cities, you find people of all walks of life, different religions, different political conviction and different sexual orientation. The Netherlands is famous for its progressive stance on equality and diversity. Everyone in the Netherlands has the right to be who they want to be and to be with who they want.

The major part of the population associates itself with the Christian fate, but there are also large Muslim and Jewish communities. Whether you want to go to church, mosque, synagogue, Hindu, Buddhist or Sikh places of worship, you can do so freely in Holland. Holland is a safe country by international standards. Violence and street crime levels are relatively low.
