It is VERY crackprone, not just splitting but cracks running in all directions. In my climate it is also highly subject to sunscald. I have gone to the smaller Lily for a Crenshaw.
It is not quite as tasty, but productive with few of the problems of Burpee's Hybrid Crenshaw. Thanks for all the good information.

Slightly decrease the amount of water applied to the melon plants once fruit is large and nearing maturity.
Early in the growing season, applying mulch around melon plants, through not directly in contact with the stem at the plant's base, can help to conserve soil moisture and minimize extreme fluctuations in the amount of water available. Watermelons and other melons are best harvested as soon as they reach maturity as leaving the fruit on the vine too long can lead to, in addition to split fruit, fruit decay, a reduction in future yields and excessively large or poor-tasting fruit.
Watermelons are generally ripe when the curly tendrils near the fruit stem become dry and brown, the spot on the melon rind where it touches the ground transitions from off-white to yellow and, in early morning, rapping on the side of the fruit with your knuckles creates a dull, rather than metallic sound.

Keep the soil evenly moist, but not waterlogged, to help prevent splitting. The best-tasting cantaloupes are the sweetest. High-quality melons have high sugar content. When a melon is stressed in the garden, the flavor is reduced at best. Sometimes the melons even split open and rot.
