How long freon last in car
Your car was designed with an air-conditioning system made to last the lifetime of the vehicle without needing a recharge. That being said, over the life of a vehicle it may develop a coolant leak. There is no set amount of time that freon will last in a vehicle.
The source of the leak needs to be identified, so that it can be fixed. As the coolant leaks out, the air conditioner will cool less efficiently. Eventually, it will not work at all. A note on freon: freon is a type of refrigerant that is rarely used in modern cars. It was used extensively in older vehicles. At low levels, the evaporator coils can ice up.
Refrigerant gas often has a dye tag that may show up around hoses and connections as a red fluid. Chronic low levels of refrigerant gas can cause the air-conditioner compressor to heat up and damage it permanently. A relatively small loss of refrigerant gas can reduce the efficiency of your air-conditioning system dramatically. A percent loss of refrigerant gas can reduce the efficacy of your air conditioner by 20 percent or more.
You can prevent this loss by having your system checked annually prior to the start of hot weather.
Have lost refrigerant gas replaced by professionals. Overcharging the system can be as damaging as chronic refrigerant gas loss. Some auto AC professionals recommend evacuating the system and refilling it every three to four years in order to test for leaks.
How long will refrigerant aka Freon last in my air conditioning unit? The answer is that it should last forever unless you have a leaking system. We have many customers call into our office because their AC system is not working as well and it should, or not working at all.
We sometimes find out the problem is related to a low refrigerant charge. This means you have a leaking system. At that point we would lay out the options. The best option is to perform a leak search and come up with a solution for the problem. The problem with topping off a system is that it will leak back out.
No one can tell you how long the refrigerant you are purchasing will last.
