I have read at least a dozen articles and most say about the same process. I believe that the issue is the former. Not sure on the RED X thing. The second DC should have a while copy of the Sysvol. Have you manually verified the Sysvol share on DC1? It brings up a Remote Server Credentials prompt. If I cancel out of that, it opens, but says it cannot access the group policy. In other words, doesn't a second DC provide what is needed for domain authentication?
The DA DirectAccess server is physical. That is best practice. What I want to do next weekend is to transfer the roles, take out GC on SBS, then turn it off without removing it from the domain yet. If that works, I am good. I think if I remove the SBS from the domain before shutting it down, recovery will be more difficult if it all does not work as it should, hence my desire to leave it in the domain when I shut it off testing.
Yes, I will make multiple backups! Might just want to do a spot check for any service that might have been bound explicitly to that machine. Also, while it is obviously good to make backups, restoring AD is generally not a great idea, unless you are doing some type of item-level restore.
Once you demote the SBS server, do not restore it back to its previous state. That will introduce unexpected errors into your AD environment. I am sure you know this, but just reminding.
